Endocrinology Research Introduced

Endocrinology is the medical speciality that deals with the endocrine system. That is it is the speciality that deals with the hormones that your body produces. Almost all of your bodily functions are controlled by hormones so this is a pretty big field. Not surprisingly then a great deal of research has gone into the study of the endocrine system and how it works.

The main focus of endocrinology is on how hormones affect the function of the body. Almost everything that the body does is the result of hormones so this is a pretty big area of research. At the most basic level a lot of the research goes into determining just how those hormones tell our bodies what to do. We have gotten pretty good at determining what hormone performs which function but we don't know much about how they do it. Learning to do this would help to cure a wide variety of diseases so a lot of effort is focused here.

Another major area of endocrinology research is on how the hormones that are so important in our bodily functions are actually created. This is an area that we have learned a lot about in recent years but there is still a long way to go. By knowing how the hormones are formed we will have a better idea of what causes a large number of chronic illnesses. This should lead to better treatments at a minimum and hopefully to being able to prevent the disease. Most diseases of the endocrine system are the result of the required hormones not being produced properly or in the correct amount. There is a large area for research here.

Research is also being done on ways to artificially make the hormones that are produced by the endocrine system. In cases where not enough of the correct hormone is being created automatically the best option is usually to artificially create it. This is not a cure to the disease but it does offer a much better quality of life for the people who suffer from these illnesses. In many cases the only way to keep them alive is to provide them with synthetic hormones.

The importance of endocrinology research has really increased in recent years. The main reason is that rapid increase in the number of people with diabetes. Diabetes is an endocrine disease, it is caused by the bodies inability to produce the correct amounts of the hormone insulin. The treatment is usually to give the patient artificial insulin, itself the result of endocrinology research. However the ideal solutions would be to find a way to actually cure the disease or even better to prevent people from getting it. Because of the rise in the number of people with diabetes is rising so fast a lot of money is now being pored into this type of research.
