In addition to doing research to determine how disease spreads epidemiology also does research to determine the general level of health of the population as a whole. They can determine if the general population is getting healthier or not over time. This will allow them to determine how effectively health policies are working. If the level of health of the population as a whole is getting worse then they know that something is wrong and changes in policy or in treatment are going to be necessary.

Another area that epidemiology research deals with is on the economic impacts of disease. They will address things like how the future labor force will be affected by disease, or how much will need to be spent on pension plans. They will even address things like how the level of health of the population will affect things like taxes and public spending. These are important questions that need to be answered, especially with our aging population. Epidemiology research looks likely to be a field that will experience a great deal of growth as these questions become more pressing.
