Public Health Research Introduced
The goal of public health is to prevent disease so it should come as no surprise that most of the research that they do is focused on the causes of diseases and the way they spread. This allows the researchers to come up with ways to prevent the spread of disease. Given that preventing disease is much cheaper than curing it you would expect that large amounts of resources are spent on public health research. Unfortunately that is not the case as the budgets lag far behind the amount spent on curing disease.
In the past most of the research on public health was focused on ways to stop the spread of disease. The primary concern was how to limit the number of people who would be affected by an infectious disease. This was essential work since epidemics would frequently do serious damage to the population. In large part this is still true in much of the third world. However since most of the public health research is done in the developed world research into stopping the spread of diseases has declined dramatically, although it is still done at a certain level.
The other main focus of public health research has been on the development of vaccinations that will prevent people from getting serious illnesses. This is less about stopping the spread of diseases than it is about preventing people from getting them. In this respect they have been very successful with diseases like small pox and polio being effectively wiped out. However there are always new diseases coming along so there is a need to continue research in this field. Therefore a great deal of research does go into creating vaccines that can prevent illness.
These days the main area of public health research is in the prevention of chronic diseases. This is mainly diseases that are largely caused by our lifestyle choices. This would include things like heart disease and type two diabetes. These are illnesses that are caused by eating a poor diet and not getting enough exercise. A great deal of the research that goes into public health is done on finding the causes of these types of illnesses and ways to reduce the frequency with which they occur. In the last few decades there has been a huge increase in the focus on physical exercise for health benefits, this is the result of public health research.
Another area where public health research is being focused is on the medical care that is available to people. The idea here is to determine what types of medical care are required and how to ensure that everybody has access to it. This is largely about determining the effectiveness of various medical treatments. This will give a good idea of how well a treatment works and whether or not it should be made available as part of standard care. This will help to ensure that resources are not wasted on ineffective treatments and that people get the medical care that they need.
